Overview

Mitogen-activated protein kinase 14 (p38α) and mitogen-activated protein kinase 11 (p38β) are members of the p38 MAP kinase subfamily of serine/threonine-specific kinases in humans, encoded by MAPK14 and MAPK11 genes respectively. These kinases serve crucial regulatory roles in signal transduction responding to cellular stress and inflammation, integrating multiple biochemical signals to control diverse cellular processes, including proliferation, differentiation, transcription regulation, programmed cell death, and production of inflammatory cytokines. Both are widely conserved and highly pursued therapeutic targets for a spectrum of diseases marked by aberrant inflammation or stress responses, with numerous drugs developed to inhibit their kinase activity.
