Target intelligence / Profile preview

Mitogen-activated protein kinase-activated protein kinase 5 (MAPKAPK5)

Target
MAPKAPK5
Molecular classification
Serine/threonine-protein kinase, Enzyme
01

Overview

MAPKAPK5 is a serine/threonine-protein kinase that functions as a tumor suppressor and is involved in cellular stress responses. It is activated by phosphorylation through upstream MAPKs. Upon activation, it translocates from the nucleus to the cytoplasm and phosphorylates several substrates, notably heat shock protein HSP27 and FOXO3. Diseases associated with altered function or expression of MAPKAPK5 include neurocardiofaciodigital syndrome, pulmonary immaturity, and possibly Alzheimer's disease. There are also implications for cancer progression and hepatocellular carcinoma.
