Mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase 6 antisense RNA 1 (MAP2K6-AS1)

Target
MAP2K6-AS1
Molecular classification
Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), antisense RNA
01

Overview

Mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase 6 antisense RNA 1 (MAP2K6-AS1, also called MEK6-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA highly expressed in human adipose and breast tissues. It is transcribed antisense to intron 1 of the MAP2K6 gene and plays a regulatory role in adipogenesis and fatty acid metabolism. MAP2K6-AS1 increases mRNA stability of MAP2K6 via interaction with NAT10, an RNA-binding acetyltransferase, and enhances adipogenic differentiation in mesenchymal stem cells. Its expression influences both pro-inflammatory and metabolic pathways but it is not considered a classical therapeutic target (enzyme, receptor, transporter)

Other names
MEK6-AS1

Mechanism of action

No drugs target MAP2K6-AS1 directly; mechanisms are regulatory (modulation of mRNA stability, cis-regulation of nearby genes, interaction with RNA-binding proteins like NAT10)

03

Biological functions

Regulation of mRNA stability (for MAP2K6)Regulation of adipogenic differentiation (modulates cell differentiation to adipocytes)Modulation of inflammatory cytokine secretionPost-transcriptional regulationFatty acid metabolism
04

Disease associations

Obesity (implicated in adipogenic differentiation)Metabolic disorders (via fatty acid metabolism)Potential role in cancer (by analogy to MAP2K6, but not directly established for MAP2K6-AS1)
05

Safety considerations

None documented; functional role in adipogenesis and cytokine regulation suggests relevance to metabolism and inflammation but no safety issues are reported
