Overview

Mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase kinase 9 (MAP3K9) is a serine/threonine protein kinase and a key upstream component of the MAP kinase signal transduction pathway. It activates the JNK pathway through phosphorylation of MAP2K4/MKK4 and MAP2K7/MKK7, leading to downstream effects on c-Jun and GATA4 transcription factors. MAP3K9 is implicated in cellular stress responses and plays a critical role in apoptosis and cell death signaling via mitochondrial pathways. The gene is associated with cancer and may be targeted pharmacologically by kinase inhibitors, including specific small molecules under investigation for therapy. There are no substantial naming errors, and its function and importance as a kinase in the MAPK cascade are well documented.
