Mitosis associated long intergenic non-coding RNA 1 (MALINC1) is a cytoplasmic long non-coding RNA highly expressed in certain subtypes of breast cancer, particularly in luminal A/B tumors and ductal carcinoma in situ. MALINC1 is modulated by the estrogen–estrogen receptor axis and has been shown to be associated with oncogenic processes, including extracellular matrix remodeling, increased cell adhesion and migration, immune response modulation, and activation of the AP-1 signaling pathway. High MALINC1 expression correlates with poorer outcomes and is considered a biomarker for prognosis and for prediction of response to immunotherapy in breast cancer. It is not a conventional receptor, enzyme, or drug target but represents a regulatory RNA of emerging interest in oncology research.
