Overview

Mitotic spindle organizing protein 2A (MZT2A) is a centrosomal protein that localizes at the centrosome and is a component of the γ-tubulin ring complex (γ-TuRC), essential for microtubule nucleation and mitotic spindle formation during cell division[2][3][6]. It regulates the balance of microtubule polymerization and depolymerization in the centrosome, ensuring proper mitosis and cell proliferation[2]. MZT2A is overexpressed in certain cancers, such as non–small cell lung cancer, where its elevated activity is associated with tumor growth and poor prognosis[2]. Loss of MZT2A disrupts microtubule nucleation, slows cell proliferation, and can impair faithful chromosome segregation[2][3]. MZT2A is also known as GCP8a, FAM128A, and MOZART2[2][3]. There are currently no drugs or established mechanisms of action specifically targeting MZT2A reported in the available literature[2]. However, its role in cancer highlights its potential both as a therapeutic target and as a biomarker for disease monitoring[2].
