Mobiluncus species are anaerobic, motile, gram-variable, curved rod-shaped bacteria that are significant components of the polymicrobial flora associated with bacterial vaginosis (BV) (StatPearls, 2023). The genus primarily includes Mobiluncus curtisii and Mobiluncus mulieris, which are frequently isolated from the vaginal tracts of women with symptomatic BV but are rarely found in healthy individuals (CDC, 2021). These organisms contribute to the pathogenesis of BV by producing metabolic byproducts like malic acid and various amines, which contribute to the characteristic vaginal discharge and odor (Journal of Medical Microbiology, 2005). In clinical practice, the identification of Mobiluncus on a Gram stain is a specific marker used in the Nugent scoring system for diagnosing BV (PubMed, 2016). While metronidazole is a standard treatment for BV, Mobiluncus species often demonstrate decreased susceptibility to this agent, frequently requiring clindamycin for effective clearance (American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 2010). Their presence is also linked to more severe reproductive health complications, including pelvic inflammatory disease and increased risk of preterm labor (NIH, 2022).
Antibiotics targeting Mobiluncus species typically inhibit DNA synthesis via nitroreduction (e.g., metronidazole) or inhibit protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit (e.g., clindamycin) (StatPearls, 2023; PubMed, 2010).
