A moist wound environment is maintained by specialized dressings designed to retain optimal moisture at the wound site. This environment promotes healing by enhancing epithelial cell migration, preserving growth factor function, supporting autolytic debridement (breakdown of necrotic tissue), increasing collagen synthesis, and modulating inflammation, angiogenesis, and cell signaling. Compared to dry conditions, wounds treated in moist environments generally heal faster, with less scarring and lower infection rates. However, careful management of wound exudate is required to prevent maceration and excessive microbial growth.
