The molybdenum cofactor (Moco) biosynthesis pathway is a highly conserved, multi-step biochemical process essential for the activity of all eukaryotic and many prokaryotic molybdenum-dependent enzymes. Moco consists of a molybdenum atom coordinated by a unique tricyclic pterin moiety called molybdopterin (MPT), with two sulfur atoms covalently bound to the metal. The pathway involves the conversion of GTP to cyclic pyranopterin monophosphate (cPMP), the formation of Molybdopterin (MPT), adenylylation/Adenylyl Transfer to Form MPT-AMP, and the insertion of Mo into Adenylated-MPT.
