Mono-synaptic Spinal Reflex

Molecular classification
Neural circuit, Reflex arc
01

Overview

The mono-synaptic spinal reflex is a fundamental neural circuit in the nervous system that enables rapid, involuntary muscle responses to specific stimuli. It is characterized by a direct synapse between a sensory (afferent) neuron and a motor (efferent) neuron within the spinal cord, without any interneurons involved. The classic example is the patellar (knee-jerk) reflex. It is initiated by stimulation of muscle spindles that detect stretch. The response is rapid and stereotyped due to minimal synaptic delay. Testing these reflexes helps assess the integrity of peripheral nerves, nerve roots, and segments of the central nervous system involved in these pathways.
