Mechanism of action

The system is modulated by drugs that inhibit the reuptake of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine by binding to their respective transporters (SERT, DAT, and NET), thereby increasing the synaptic availability of these neurotransmitters (PubMed, PMID: 19702553). It is also affected by agents that act as agonists or antagonists at various monoamine receptors or inhibit metabolic enzymes like monoamine oxidase (StatPearls, 2023).
