Overview

Monoamine neurotransmitter systems encompass the networks and molecular machinery responsible for the synthesis, release, action, and degradation of a class of neurotransmitters which includes dopamine, norepinephrine (noradrenaline), serotonin, epinephrine (adrenaline), and histamine. These systems play fundamental roles in the regulation of mood, emotion, reward, cognition, autonomic and endocrine functions, and motor control. Monoaminergic dysfunction is central to the pathophysiology of a variety of neuropsychiatric and neurological disorders, such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and Parkinson’s disease.
