Monoamine receptors are essential mediators for several major neurotransmitters in both central and peripheral nervous systems. They bind monoamines such as dopamine, norepinephrine (noradrenaline), epinephrine (adrenaline), serotonin (5-HT), histamine, melatonin, and various trace amines. Most are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) that initiate intracellular signaling cascades upon ligand binding, with the exception of the serotonin 5-HT3 receptor, which is a ligand-gated ion channel.
