Overview

Monoaminergic receptors are a broad class of receptors that bind monoamine neurotransmitters and trace amines. These receptors play crucial roles in the nervous system, modulating processes such as emotion, arousal, cognition, attention, and certain types of memory. They are primarily G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), with the notable exception of the serotonin 5-HT3 receptor subtype, which is a ligand-gated ion channel. The main classes include adrenergic, dopamine, histamine, melatonin, serotonin, and trace amine-associated receptors (TAARs). Many psychiatric and neurological drugs target monoaminergic systems, and dysregulation of these pathways underlies conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and movement disorders like Parkinson’s disease.
