Monocarboxylate transporters (MCTs) are a family of proton-linked plasma membrane transporters responsible for the translocation of monocarboxylates, such as lactate, pyruvate, and ketone bodies, across biological membranes. They play essential roles in cellular metabolism, pH regulation, and nutrient transport. Overexpression of certain MCT isoforms is observed in various cancers, making them potential therapeutic targets.
