Monocarboxylate transporter 1 (MCT1), encoded by the SLC16A1 gene, is a transmembrane protein responsible for the proton-linked transport of monocarboxylates such as lactate, pyruvate, and ketone bodies across cell membranes. It plays a crucial role in cellular metabolism, energy homeostasis, and various physiological processes, including the Cori cycle and the astrocyte-neuron lactate shuttle. MCT1 function is dependent on interaction with ancillary proteins, particularly basigin, for proper localization and activity. Overexpression of MCT1 has been implicated in certain cancers.
