Overview

Monocytes are a type of white blood cell (leukocyte) that play a central role in the innate immune response. They originate from the bone marrow and circulate in the bloodstream. Monocytes are essential for detecting, responding to, and eliminating pathogens. Upon activation by pathogens or inflammatory signals, monocytes can phagocytose microbes, present antigens to T cells, and secrete pro-inflammatory cytokines. They can differentiate into macrophages or dendritic cells once they migrate into tissues. Monocyte counts often change during infections or autoimmune diseases. Increased recruitment is observed at sites of inflammation. In autoimmune conditions, altered numbers/functionality contribute to disease pathogenesis.
