The monocyte-macrophage system, also known as the mononuclear phagocyte system, is a critical component of the innate immune system. It comprises circulating monocytes in the blood and tissue-resident macrophages throughout various organs. These cells are united by their ability to perform phagocytosis—engulfing and digesting pathogens, cellular debris, and apoptotic cells. They also present antigens to T lymphocytes, secrete cytokines, and play roles in tissue homeostasis and repair. Dysfunction within this system is implicated in numerous diseases, including immunodeficiencies, autoimmune/inflammatory diseases, and genetic disorders.
