Overview
The reticuloendothelial system (RES), now largely synonymous with the mononuclear phagocyte system, is a network of phagocytic cells (monocytes, macrophages, and specialized endothelial cells) distributed throughout the body, especially in the liver, spleen, bone marrow, and lymph nodes. It plays a crucial role in phagocytosis, immune regulation, clearance of pathogens and cellular debris, and hematopoiesis support. Impaired RES function can be observed in various diseases and can be assessed using radiolabeled particle studies for clinical prognosis.
