Overview

The mononuclear phagocytic system (MPS) is a component of the immune system composed of phagocytic cells with a single round nucleus. It includes bone marrow progenitors, blood monocytes, tissue macrophages, and dendritic cells. The MPS plays essential roles in host defense, tissue homeostasis, development, and immune regulation through phagocytosis, antigen presentation, cytokine secretion, and tissue remodeling. Dysregulation of the MPS is implicated in various diseases, including hematologic malignancies, hereditary storage diseases, and anemia. Targeting components of the MPS, such as CSF1R, is being explored for therapeutic modulation of macrophage activity, particularly in cancer immunotherapy.
