Mood responses refer to the complex physiological and psychological manifestations of an individual's affective state, rather than a discrete molecular target such as a receptor or enzyme (American Psychological Association, 2023). Dysregulation of these responses is a core feature of psychiatric conditions such as Major Depressive Disorder and Bipolar Disorder (PubMed, 2022). While pharmacological agents like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or mood stabilizers influence these responses, they do so by binding to specific molecular targets like the serotonin transporter (SERT) or ion channels, rather than the 'mood response' entity itself. Consequently, this term is classified as a clinical outcome or systemic biological function rather than a single druggable molecular target.
Drugs modulate mood responses by altering the synaptic concentration of monoamine neurotransmitters (serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine), stabilizing neuronal membranes, or modulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and neuroplasticity.
