Moraxella catarrhalis surface proteins (McSPs), particularly Ubiquitous Surface Proteins (UspAs) such as UspA1 and UspA2, are crucial for bacterial pathogenicity. They mediate adhesion to host cells, confer serum resistance by binding complement regulatory molecules like C4BP and C3/C3b, and facilitate iron acquisition. Their sequence diversity contributes to immune evasion and poses challenges for therapeutic targeting. Other proteins, like CopB, contribute to iron uptake. McSPs are considered therapeutic targets for preventing or treating M. catarrhalis infections.
