Overview

MORN repeat-containing protein 1 (MORN1) is a protein encoded by the human *MORN1* gene, located on chromosome 1p36.33[2]. It contains multiple MORN (Membrane Occupation and Recognition Nexus) repeats—a motif present in a variety of proteins thought to mediate membrane association or protein-protein interactions[1][2][3]. In humans, the protein is 497 amino acids long and has seven MORN repeats[2]. MORN1 is predicted to be cytoplasmic, nuclear, or mitochondrial but is not a transmembrane protein[2]. MORN1 orthologs are found across eukaryotes and even bacteria. In the parasite *Toxoplasma gondii*, MORN1 is essential for nuclear division, daughter cell budding, and is associated with cytoskeletal structures during cell division[2][5]. Its molecular function is not fully understood in humans, but evidence from parasitic organisms suggests a key role in cytoskeletal organization and possibly membrane interactions[1][2]. Dimerization and oligomerization via MORN repeats appear to be structural features, and MORN1 may mediate interactions between the cytoskeleton and membranes[1][3][5]. There is currently no evidence that MORN1 is a therapeutic target, receptor, or direct drug target in humans. No drugs are known to interact with MORN1 and there are no established roles in human disease, nor are there safety concerns, mechanism of action, or biomarker data reported for this protein in clinical contexts[1][2][3][5].
