Mortality factor 4 (MORF4) is a gene cloned from human chromosome 4, encoding a transcriptional regulator protein with motifs such as nuclear localization signal, helix-loop-helix, and leucine zipper domains commonly seen in regulatory proteins. MORF4 induces cellular senescence, particularly in groups of immortal tumor cells, through its regulation of transcription; its protein is highly unstable and tightly controlled by ubiquitin-proteasome–mediated degradation. It is a member of a small gene family, including MRG15 and MRGX; MORF4 shares high sequence identity with these but is a truncated version. MORF4 participates in several nuclear protein complexes but is not itself a conventional therapeutic target or drug receptor.
