Overview

Mosquito salivary gland proteins (SGPs) are a diverse group of secreted molecules produced by mosquito salivary glands to facilitate blood feeding and influence host-pathogen interactions. They counteract host hemostasis, modulate immune responses, and can enhance or inhibit pathogen transmission. Key examples include Apyrase (inhibits platelet aggregation), Sialokinin (vasodilator), D7 proteins (binds biogenic amines), Serine Protease Inhibitors (inhibit coagulation), Peroxidases/Catechol Oxidases (vasodilation), and AaNRP (recruits myeloid cells, enhances viral infection). SGPs are considered potential therapeutic and vaccine targets to disrupt mosquito feeding and pathogen transmission.
