Overview
SMAD1 is a key intracellular signal transducer and transcriptional modulator in the TGF-β superfamily, particularly for BMP signaling. Upon activation by BMP type I receptor kinases, SMAD1 forms complexes with co-SMADs like SMAD4 and translocates to the nucleus to regulate gene expression involved in cell growth, apoptosis, morphogenesis, development, immune responses, and tissue homeostasis. Dysregulation is linked to developmental and cardiovascular diseases.
