MPPED2 antisense RNA 1 (MPPED2-AS1)

Target
MPPED2-AS1
Molecular classification
Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), Antisense RNA
01

Overview

MPPED2 antisense RNA 1 (MPPED2-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA gene located antisense to the MPPED2 gene on chromosome 11p13. It is downregulated in several cancer types and acts as an epigenetic regulator, modulating the methylation and expression of the tumor suppressor gene MPPED2 by interacting with DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1). This regulatory relationship appears important for suppressing cell proliferation, migration, and invasion in cancer cells. Because MPPED2-AS1 is associated with tumor suppressor activity and downregulation in cancers, it is under investigation as a potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarker, though it is not considered a conventional therapeutic target[1][3][5].

Biological functions

Epigenetic regulation of gene expression, specifically influencing the methylation status and expression of the neighboring MPPED2 geneLikely tumor suppressor role via indirect regulation of cell proliferation, migration, and invasion (mediated through MPPED2 protein levels)
03

Disease associations

Cancer (documented tumor suppressor–associated downregulation in breast carcinoma, papillary thyroid carcinoma, with evidence for a role in carcinogenesis)
04

Biomarkers

Reduced expression of MPPED2-AS1 is associated with certain cancers, such as breast and thyroid carcinomas, and may serve as a diagnostic/prognostic biomarker
