Target intelligence / Profile preview
MRAP antisense RNA 1 (MRAP-AS1) is a long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) gene transcribed antisense to the MRAP (melanocortin 2 receptor accessory protein) gene. MRAP-AS1 belongs to the lncRNA class and, as implied by its name, is likely involved in the regulation of MRAP gene expression or chromatin structure. There are currently no published reports of MRAP-AS1 directly mediating a therapeutic effect or being a validated drug target. Antisense lncRNAs often participate in local or global gene regulation by mechanisms including transcriptional interference, chromatin modification, or post-transcriptional control, but specific biological roles, interacting drugs, or utility as a biomarker or therapeutic target for MRAP-AS1 remain to be established in the published literature[3][5]. Diseases associated with MRAP-AS1 are tentatively linked through its locus, such as glucocorticoid deficiency, likely reflecting the function of the adjacent MRAP gene rather than its own independent role[5]. There is frequent confusion between MRAP-AS1 (an RNA gene/lncRNA) and MRAP (a protein-coding gene for a receptor accessory protein); these are distinct molecular entities with different functions and druggability. MRAP-AS1 itself shows no evidence of being a direct therapeutic target, nor is there evidence of it being a protein, receptor, or enzyme[5][3].
