Overview

MRPL20 antisense RNA 1 (MRPL20-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) gene found on human chromosome 1 and is classified as part of the lncRNA RNA gene family[3][5]. It does not code for a protein but is implicated in molecular regulation at the RNA level, particularly in cardiovascular and hematological contexts. MRPL20-AS1 is downregulated in endothelial cells during hypoxic injury and in patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), correlating inversely with disease severity. Its altered expression may be linked to the cardiovascular consequences associated with OSAS, and it has been proposed as a candidate biomarker for identifying severe cases of the disease[1][4]. Additionally, MRPL20-AS1 is part of a seven-lncRNA model predicting prognosis in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), where its elevated expression has been observed in patient samples versus controls, suggesting utility in prognosis and possibly patient stratification for immunotherapies[4]. There are currently no direct pharmacological modulators or FDA-approved drugs targeting MRPL20-AS1, nor is it established as a classical druggable "target" (such as an enzyme or receptor)[1][4][5]. Its current significance lies primarily in research and as a component of gene expression signatures, rather than as an established therapeutic target.
