Overview

MRPL32 pseudogene 1 (MRPL32P1) is a non-coding segment of DNA related to the functional MRPL32 gene, which encodes the mitochondrial ribosomal protein L32 and plays a role in mitochondrial ribosome assembly[7][4][5]. However, as a pseudogene, MRPL32P1 does not produce a functional protein or perform any known biological functions. Pseudogenes like MRPL32P1 arise from the duplication or retrotransposition of functional genes but generally accumulate mutations that prevent protein coding. There are no known clinical, therapeutic, or biomarker implications associated with MRPL32P1, and it is not considered a pharmacological or therapeutic target[7][8][4]. MRPL32 (not the pseudogene) encodes a genuine mitochondrial ribosomal protein and is involved in mitochondrial protein synthesis, but MRPL32P1 is only a nonfunctional genomic copy, classified as a pseudogene[1][3][5][7]. If a gene symbol is followed by "P" or described as a pseudogene (e.g., MRPL32P1, RPL32P3), it almost always denotes a nonfunctional element without a therapeutic or diagnostic role[7][10][8].
