MSC antisense RNA 1 (MSC-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) classified as an antisense transcript, transcribed from the opposite strand of a protein-coding gene. It functions primarily in gene regulation, including modulation of chromatin state and gene transcription through epigenetic mechanisms such as histone modification. MSC-AS1 can act as a competing endogenous RNA by binding microRNAs, thereby influencing the expression of downstream mRNAs. Its dysregulation has been associated with cancer pathogenesis, including uveal melanoma and prostate cancer, where its expression and methylation status can serve as a prognostic biomarker. There are no known drugs specifically targeting this lncRNA, and it is not considered a conventional drug target like enzymes or receptors.
