MT-ATP8 pseudogene 2 (MTATP8P2) is a nuclear pseudogene derived from the functional mitochondrial MT-ATP8 gene, which encodes a subunit of ATP synthase (Complex V) involved in mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation[1][2][3][5]. As a pseudogene, MTATP8P2 does not encode a functional protein, is not expressed to produce a functional product, and has no direct role in cellular metabolism or disease. The functional MT-ATP8 gene (not the pseudogene) is implicated in critical mitochondrial processes and has variants linked to rare mitochondrial diseases, but there is no such evidence for its pseudogenes. Consequently, MTATP8P2 is not considered a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or valid therapeutic target. All biological functions, disease associations, drugs, and mechanisms of action reported in the literature pertain to the mitochondrial gene MT-ATP8, not to MTATP8P2.
