Overview

MT-CO1 pseudogene 31 (MTCO1P31) is a human pseudogene, meaning it is a genomic DNA sequence similar to the functional mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (MT-CO1) gene, but it is not expressed as a functional protein due to accumulated disabling mutations or lack of regulatory elements[5]. There are multiple pseudogenes for MT-CO1 listed in genomic databases, which are generally regarded as non-functional genomic "fossils" and are not considered therapeutic targets, receptors, enzymes, or transporters. MTCO1P31 specifically denotes the 31st annotated pseudogene of the MT-CO1 family in the human genome and has neither a demonstrated biological role nor clinical relevance for therapeutic intervention[4][5]. MT-CO1 (not the pseudogene) encodes the catalytic core of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase complex, which is essential for electron transport and ATP production[1][3]. However, the pseudogene variant (MTCO1P31) does not share this function, is not biologically active, and should not be confused with the functional mitochondrial enzyme[1][5].
