Overview

MT-CO1 pseudogene 39 (MTCO1P39) is a human nuclear pseudogene corresponding to the mitochondrially encoded cytochrome c oxidase I (MT-CO1) gene[3][4]. Pseudogenes such as MTCO1P39 are segments of DNA that resemble known genes but contain mutations or truncations that prevent them from producing functional proteins. There is no evidence that this pseudogene is expressed, nor does it play any known role in mitochondrial function, disease, or as a therapeutic target. It should not be confused with the functional MT-CO1 gene, which encodes a key catalytic subunit of cytochrome c oxidase in mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation[1][2].
