MT-CO1 pseudogene 45 (MTCO1P45) is a processed pseudogene related to the mitochondrial gene MT-CO1, which encodes mitochondrially encoded cytochrome c oxidase I, a subunit of the respiratory Complex IV in the mitochondrial electron transport chain. However, as a pseudogene, MTCO1P45 does not encode a functional protein, is not translated, and has no direct biological activity or therapeutic relevance. Pseudogenes may arise through duplication or retrotransposition events but are characteristically non-functional due to mutations such as frame shifts or premature stop codons. There is currently no evidence that MTCO1P45 has a recognized role in disease, is a drug target, or serves as a clinical biomarker. Any therapeutic interest or disease associations involving MT-CO1 refer specifically to the protein-coding gene, not the pseudogene[1][2][3].
