MT-CO1 pseudogene 46 (MTCO1P46) is a mitochondrial pseudogene that shares sequence similarity with the functional mitochondrially encoded cytochrome c oxidase I gene (MT-CO1) but does not encode a functional protein. Pseudogenes are generally noncoding regions present in the genome that arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events but have lost the ability to encode proteins due to mutations. The true MT-CO1 gene encodes cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, a key mitochondrial enzyme essential in the electron transport chain and cellular respiration. However, any gene described as "pseudogene" (including MTCO1P46) is nonfunctional and not considered a receptor, transporter, enzyme, or therapeutic target.
