Overview

MT-CO1 pseudogene 5 (MTCO1P5), also known as "AC026166.2-001" or "mitochondrially encoded cytochrome c oxidase I pseudogene 5," is a pseudogene related to the mitochondrial gene MT-CO1. It is not an active protein-coding gene or known molecular target in human biology[3]. However, as a pseudogene, MTCO1P5 does not encode a functional protein and does not participate in cellular respiratory functions[3]. It is likely a nuclear copy of mitochondrial DNA (NUMT) and primarily serves as a genomic remnant without known impact on cellular physiology or pathology. There is nothing therapeutically actionable or molecularly functional about MTCO1P5. It is a genomic pseudogene, not a target, and should not be confused with MT-CO1, the active mitochondrial gene encoding the complex IV subunit[1][2][3].
