MT-CO1 pseudogene 52 (MTCO1P52) is a pseudogene of the mitochondrially encoded cytochrome c oxidase I (MT-CO1) gene. Pseudogenes are genomic DNA sequences similar to normal genes but are nonfunctional; they may result from gene duplication or retrotransposition events. MTCO1P52 does not encode a functional protein and does not participate in known cellular, disease, or therapeutic mechanisms. The MT-CO1 gene—which MTCO1P52 is related to as a pseudogene—codes for subunit I of cytochrome c oxidase, an important enzyme in the mitochondrial electron transport chain. However, MTCO1P52 itself is only a genomic sequence and does not contribute to these functions or to human disease, as far as current scientific databases indicate. There are no reports or databases listing interactions between MTCO1P52 and drugs, nor is it identified as a biomarker or the source of safety concerns. In summary, MT-CO1 pseudogene 52 is a human pseudogene related to the mitochondrial MT-CO1 gene. It does not code for a functional protein or play a known role in therapy, disease, or biology. It is not considered a therapeutic target.
