Overview

MT-CO1 pseudogene 8 (MTCO1P8) is a nuclear-encoded pseudogene derived from the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (MT-CO1) gene. Unlike the functional MT-CO1 gene, which encodes a key subunit of cytochrome c oxidase (complex IV) involved in mitochondrial electron transport and energy production, MTCO1P8 does not code for a functional protein[7]. Instead, it is considered a nonfunctional, "dead" copy of the gene, presumably originating from the migration and integration of mitochondrial DNA fragments into the nuclear genome—a phenomenon known as nuclear mitochondrial pseudogenes or "numts"[2]. These pseudogenes can complicate genetic studies, especially those relying on DNA barcoding or mitochondrial gene sequences, but they have no established biological, pathological, or pharmacological roles in humans[2][7]. Key points: - **MTCO1P8 is not a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or drug target.** - **It is a pseudogene: nonfunctional, without known biological or disease roles.** - **No drugs, mechanisms, or biomarkers are associated.** - **Its primary relevance is to genomic annotation and potential confusion in DNA studies.** There is no evidence of therapeutic or diagnostic value, nor of functional protein expression, for MTCO1P8 in humans[7][2].
