MT-CO1 pseudogene 9 (MTCO1P9) is a nuclear pseudogene in humans, homologous to the functional mitochondrial gene MT-CO1, which encodes cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1—the catalytic core of mitochondrial complex IV. Unlike MT-CO1, MTCO1P9 does not encode a translatable protein and is classified as a pseudogene. Pseudogenes such as MTCO1P9 often arise from genomic duplication or retrotransposition of functional genes but lack regulatory elements or contain damaging mutations that prevent their expression or function. MTCO1P9 does not participate in cellular processes, disease mechanisms, or drug interactions; thus, it is not considered a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor[5][7].
