Overview

MT-CO2 pseudogene 10 (MTCO2P10) is a nonfunctional DNA segment resembling the mitochondrial gene for cytochrome c oxidase subunit II (MT-CO2), but it does not encode a functional protein[2][4][7][11]. It is classified as a pseudogene because sequence changes, such as mutations or deletions, prevent its transcription and/or translation into a biologically active product. MTCO2P10 is located on chromosome 7 in the nuclear genome, in contrast to the functional MT-CO2 gene encoded by mitochondrial DNA[4]. Pseudogenes such as MTCO2P10 serve mainly as markers of evolution or gene duplication and are not considered therapeutic targets or biologically active molecules. There is no evidence of MTCO2P10 functioning as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or other druggable target in human health or disease. It should not be confused with the functional MT-CO2 gene, which plays an essential role in mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation[1][3][10].

Biological functions

Pseudogenes do not encode functional proteins and generally lack direct biological activity[11]. However, some pseudogenes may play regulatory roles or have transcripts that influence gene expression in limited contexts, but there is no evidence of such function for MTCO2P10.
03

Disease associations

Currently, MTCO2P10 is not recognized to have specific disease associations or roles in pathology[7].
