Overview

MT-CO2 pseudogene 17 (MTCO2P17) is a human pseudogene located on chromosome 2 that shares sequence similarity with the functional mitochondrial MT-CO2 gene, which encodes subunit II of cytochrome c oxidase (complex IV of the respiratory chain)[3][4][5][7]. As a pseudogene, MTCO2P17 does not encode a functional protein and is classified as a non-coding genetic locus. While pseudogenes generally lack protein-coding potential, emerging research suggests some may regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally, for example by acting as competing endogenous RNAs, but there is no current evidence for such a function specific to MTCO2P17[6][7]. MTCO2P17 should not be confused with the functional MT-CO2 gene or its protein product, which are involved in mitochondrial electron transport and associated with disease when mutated[1][9].
