MT-CO2 pseudogene 23 (MTCO2P23) is a human pseudogene annotated in the genome as a non-protein-coding DNA sequence that closely resembles the functional mitochondrial MT-CO2 gene. Unlike the protein-coding MT-CO2 gene, which encodes subunit II of cytochrome c oxidase of the mitochondrial respiratory chain, MTCO2P23 does not produce a protein product and lacks biological activity. Pseudogenes can arise from duplication or retrotransposition events and may contain remnants of exonic or intronic sequences, but typically do not participate in cellular functions. There is no evidence that MTCO2P23 is translated or involved in any disease-related processes[2][4][5][7].\n\nIf the intent was to identify a disease-associated or drug-targetable gene or protein, MTCO2P23 is not correct, as it is neither a receptor, nor an enzyme, nor involved in any known cellular pathway.
