Overview

MT-CO2 pseudogene 24 (MTCO2P24) is a nuclear pseudogene found in Homo sapiens[2][3][7][11]. It is a nonfunctional DNA sequence that bears similarity to the functional mitochondrially encoded cytochrome c oxidase II gene (MT-CO2), but does not produce a functional protein[12]. MTCO2P24 is located on chromosome 5 (hg38: chr5:98409675-98410100)[3]. As a pseudogene, it does not have known biological function, disease relevance, or direct interactions with drugs, and it is not considered a therapeutic target. Pseudogenes like MTCO2P24 may arise from ancestral gene duplication or retroposition and, while structurally similar to protein-coding genes, they have lost the ability to encode a functional protein due to mutations or lack of regulatory elements[12]. If you require structured information for the functional mitochondrial gene MT-CO2 (cytochrome c oxidase subunit II), note that this is a separate entity with numerous biological functions and disease associations[1][5][14], but those do not apply to its pseudogene MTCO2P24.
