It is not a protein-coding gene and does not express a functional product. MTCO3P1 represents a non-functional genomic sequence homologous to the protein-coding mitochondrial gene MT-CO3 (which encodes cytochrome c oxidase subunit III); however, as a pseudogene on the nuclear genome (chromosome 6), it does not participate in electron transport, respiratory chain function, or any known biological processes, nor is it implicated as a therapeutic target or associated with disease, function, biomarker utility, or drug interactions[6][8][9].
