Target intelligence / Profile preview
MT-CO3 pseudogene 22 (MTCO3P22) is a pseudogene related to the mitochondrial gene encoding cytochrome c oxidase subunit III (MT-CO3). Unlike the functional MT-CO3 gene, which encodes an essential component of the mitochondrial respiratory chain, MTCO3P22 does not produce a functional protein and has no recognized role in biological processes or human disease. It is considered a non-functional genomic sequence, commonly arising from gene duplication or retrotransposition events[2][4]. Important context: Do not confuse MTCO3P22 (pseudogene) with MT-CO3 (functional mitochondrially encoded cytochrome c oxidase III), which is enzymatically active and associated with mitochondrial disease and bioenergetic disorders[3][5][6]. Only MT-CO3 is a known therapeutic target and functional protein-coding gene.
