Overview

MT-CO3 pseudogene 28 (MTCO3P28) is a human nuclear-encoded pseudogene located on chromosome 4. It is a non-functional copy of the mitochondrially encoded cytochrome c oxidase III gene (MT-CO3), meaning it does not encode a functional protein and has no recognized biological or disease role. MTCO3P28 is classified as a pseudogene, typically inactive, and is not a therapeutic target, nor does it interact with any known drugs[1][3]. MT-CO3 itself (the authentic functional gene) encodes a subunit of cytochrome c oxidase (complex IV of the mitochondrial electron transport chain), but MTCO3P28 is only a noncoding fossil of that gene[2][5][6]. All available data indicate that MTCO3P28 is a genuine human gene annotation, but its only significance is as a pseudogene, with no role in therapy or disease[3].
