MT-CO3 pseudogene 31 (MTCO3P31), also known as mitochondrially encoded cytochrome c oxidase III pseudogene 31, is a human pseudogene. Pseudogenes are genomic DNA sequences similar to normal genes but are generally non-functional; they lack the ability to encode a protein or produce a functional RNA product. MTCO3P31 is not associated with any known biological function, molecular pathway, or disease phenotype. It is not an enzyme, transporter, receptor, or transcription factor, and there are no drugs targeting this locus[1]. For reference, the canonical functional gene is MT-CO3, which encodes a core subunit of cytochrome c oxidase (Complex IV of the mitochondrial respiratory chain), critical for oxidative phosphorylation[5][6]. However, MTCO3P31 is not this functional gene—it is a nuclear pseudogene related to MT-CO3, and does not contribute to mitochondrial function or disease[1].
