Target intelligence / Profile preview
MT-CYB pseudogene 17 (MTCYBP17) is a genomic DNA sequence in humans similar in sequence to the functional mitochondrial-encoded cytochrome b gene (MT-CYB) but does not encode a functional protein product. Pseudogenes like MTCYBP17 arise by duplication or retrotransposition of functional genes, but accumulate mutations preventing protein synthesis. MTCYBP17 is classified as a pseudogene, and unlike the MT-CYB gene, it is not involved in mitochondrial respiration, ATP synthesis, or clinical disorders related to mitochondrial complex III deficiency. There is no evidence in scientific literature supporting a role for MTCYBP17 as a drug target, biomarker, or disease-causing gene.
