Target intelligence / Profile preview
MT-CYB pseudogene 18 (MTCYBP18) is a recognized human pseudogene, as referenced by the HUGO Gene Nomenclature Committee (HGNC:51976)[4]. Unlike the mitochondrial cytochrome b (MT-CYB) gene, which encodes a critical subunit of mitochondrial complex III, the pseudogene variant does not produce a functional protein and is not known to participate in any molecular pathways, biological functions, or disease processes. Pseudogenes such as MTCYBP18 are typically non-functional DNA sequences derived from previously functional genes, and thus are not considered legitimate therapeutic targets, nor do they interact with drugs or serve as disease biomarkers[4]. For clarity, information regarding the actual mitochondrial cytochrome b (MT-CYB) gene—which does have important biological roles and disease associations—should not be attributed to this pseudogene. There are no therapeutic or diagnostic implications relating to "MT-CYB pseudogene 18" itself[4].
